KUNSTHAL AARHUS
Kunsthal Aarhus is a small oasis in the heart of Aarhus, presenting experimental art from the local, national, and international art scenes. Its exhibition programme features solo exhibitions by prominent artists, major annual solo and profile exhibitions, as well as ongoing collaborations on the graduation exhibition of the Det Jyske Kunstakademi and Kunstnernes Påskeudstilling, KP & SPRING.
Kunsthal Aarhus is an inclusive exhibition venue that aims to inspire curiosity about art among a broad and diverse audience.
VALUES AND COMMUNITY
Because Kunsthal Aarhus is committed to being inclusive, mediation, interpretation, and communication are central to the development of its exhibitions and other activities. Kunsthal Aarhus is not only a place for art, but also a crossroads for music, film, literature, and other art forms - a venue where cultural events play a significant role in the programme and serve as a social connector between audiences.
At Kunsthal Aarhus, visitors should feel that there is a place for them. It is a welcoming environment where people can enjoy the atmosphere on many levels - through artistic experiences, in the café, the shop, and at social events.
In recent years, the institution has developed a strong profile in engaging young audiences, particularly upper secondary school students and university students. We collaborate with educational institutions, schools, and other local partners to create new experiences, foster meaningful communities, and inspire new generations to become curious about art, creativity, and the insights they can offer.
SPONSORSHIPS AND NETWORK
Kunsthal Aarhus continuously develops its network and engages in collaborations at local, national, and international levels in connection with exhibitions, the sculpture park, events, foundation support, and sponsorships. The institution works from the premise that collaborations should facilitate exchange between the parties involved and help take them in new directions, while developing and refining competencies and resources. Kunsthal Aarhus considers this approach, and the ongoing development of existing partnerships, essential to the institution’s cultural, professional, and social growth.
Most recently, Kunsthal Aarhus has collaborated with Hasselblad Foundation, Tiger Tanuki, Kunstnernes Påskeudstilling, JP/Politikens Hus, Art Matter, Det Jyske Kunstakademi, Aarhus Festuge, Aarhus Billede- og Medieskole, ARoS, VIA University College, Godsbanen, Aarhus Billedkunstcenter, Ice Screen Printing, Aarhus Billede- og Medieskole, Aarhus Art Prize, Napalm Kunst, VoxHall, Radar, and Aarhus Universitet.
Kunsthal Aarhus is generously supported by the following organisations and foundations: Aarhus Kommune, Ny Carlsbergfondet, Statens Kunstfond, Augustinus Fonden, Spar Nord Fonden, Det Obelske Familiefond, Salling Fondene, Beckett-Fonden, Axel Muusfeldts Fond, C.A.C Fonden, Knud Højgaards Fond, Lemvigh-Müller Fonden, Toyota-Fonden, and Musikpuljen i Aarhus.
KUNSTHAL AARHUS' HISTORY
Kunsthal Aarhus has existed as an exhibition venue since 1917. In its earliest years, it was known as Kunstbygningen, but in 1955 it was renamed Aarhus Permanente, after the organisation that managed the venue until 1972 as an exhibition space for art, design objects, and tools. To mark the occasion, the building was painted red—a colour described by a journalist from Aarhus Stiftstidende in 1955 as “a festive brick red.”
For a long period, the building was artist-run and primarily exhibited works by local artists. Since 2013, it has been known as Kunsthal Aarhus and has operated as a contemporary art institution with professional management, a board of directors, and exhibitions featuring international, national, and local artists.
The building was originally designed by architect Høeg-Hansen and later expanded by C.F. Møller Arkitekter in the 1990s and 2000s into its current form. Kunsthal Aarhus comprises 1,000 square metres of exhibition space across five galleries. In 2017, the institution celebrated its 100th anniversary, making it one of the oldest art halls in Denmark and Europe.
Over the past decade, Kunsthal Aarhus has presented solo exhibitions by artists including Ay-O (2025), Marie Kølbæk Iversen (2025), Nanna Debois Buhl (2024), Maryam Jafri (2023), Nathalie Du Pasquier (2023), Simon Dybbroe Møller (2023), Kirstine Roepstorff (2022), Sammy Baloji (2020), Sondra Perry (2019), Sidsel Meineche Hansen (2018), Thomas Hirschhorn (2017), Otobong Nkanga (2017), Berlinde De Bruyckere (2017), and Elvin Flamingo (2015).
The institution has also presented a number of major group exhibitions, including Synthetic Summit (2025), Rhizome – Network Without Center Point (2024), Minimalism-Maximalism-Mechanissmmm (2022), the visionary exhibition GO EXTREME (2021–22), Grave Monuments (2021), Post Institutional Stress Disorder (2018–19), WATCHED! Surveillance, Art and Photography (2016), DUMP! Multispecies Making and Unmaking (2015), and Systemics (2013–14).
